Scottish supermarket shelf-filler Morvern Callar (Samantha Morton) uses her boyfriend’s inheritance after his suicide to escape from her boring life. Emotionally intense road movie by the director of the prize-winning Ratcatcher. The film is based on Alan Warner’s 1995 cult novel, and has a markedly feminist twist that reflects the director’s reluctance to limit her heroine by domesticity or any other factor. Clearly influenced by Camus, the protagonist does not know why she does what she does, but chooses to survive, stripping herself of all the attributes attributed to her social identity.
