synopsis
In a distant future, on a wild planet, lonely teenager Roxy frees a criminal buried in the sand. Once freed, the woman starts spreading fear and death again. Roxy and her mother Zora are deemed responsible, exiled from their community and sentenced to track down the killer. Thus, they begin roaming the fantastical and spectral territories of their barren, dirty paradise. With a terrific nod to westerns, fairy tales and sci- fi literature and cinema, it promotes a fluid encounter between cinema and literature. The first film of a trilogy linked to Dante’s Divine Comedy in which the three films, in chronological order, correspond to Paradise, Purgatory and Hell. After Blue, the original French title is Paradis Sale (Dirty Paradise) uniquely treats the subject of gender and sexual dissidence. Inspired by the theories of the post-human body, specifically Donna Haraway’s theory of cyborgs, ambiguity is experienced as a strength, by its ability to cross borders. And, as ever, it does so with a good deal of humour!
