17-year-old aspiring rapper Elina is forced to move from Finland to southern France when her mother gets a French boyfriend. When she meets her new step-sister, the charismatic ballerina Sofia, who lives a drug and alcohol fueled double life, she immediately falls in love. It is an infatuation that soon transitions into obsession as Elina adopts increasingly brutal methods to have Sofia all to herself, and Sofia pulls Elina deeper into her own world of lies and deceit. Suino was inspired by his own documentary “Never Again” about the Finnish rapper Mercedes Bentso, who uses rap as a way to express his darkest emotions, fears, desires and most forbidden fantasies, as does Elina, the protagonist of Heartbeast.
