synopsis
Mariana, 21 years old, belongs to a world where she must do her utmost to keep up the appearance of a perfect woman. In order to resist temptation, she and her girlfriends try their best to control everything and everyone around them. And that includes the town sinners. At night, the girl gang put on masks, then hunt down and beat up all women who have deviated from the right path. However, the day will come when the urge to scream will be stronger than it has ever been… In a bold gamble, for its treatment and humour, this film works with the idea that trauma or certain types of experiences can destabilise dominant narratives.
It goes beyond the obvious, literary implication of its title and wants to dismantle other beliefs, such as that of hysteria (which has so well served the discourse of patriarchy and kept women away from public and political social space). It cannot fail to take us back to Hélène Cixous’ The Laugh of the Medusa. Between fantasy and pop music, the women’s screams, instead of being hysterical, are liberating and cathartic.
